Background of the Study
Libraries in universities serve as vital resources for academic learning and research. The University of Maiduguri, located in Maiduguri LGA, Borno State, has a large collection of books and resources that students rely on for their studies. However, students and staff often face challenges in locating and retrieving books in a timely manner, which is exacerbated by the sheer volume of library items. Traditional library cataloging and retrieval systems, while effective to some extent, are not always efficient or user-friendly, particularly when dealing with large collections.

Artificial intelligence, combined with computer vision, can provide an innovative solution to streamline the library book retrieval process. AI-powered systems can use image recognition to identify books on shelves, track their location, and assist students and staff in quickly finding the resources they need. This study aims to develop an AI-powered library book retrieval system that utilizes computer vision to enhance the efficiency of book retrieval at the University of Maiduguri.

Statement of the Problem
At the University of Maiduguri, students and library staff face challenges in locating and retrieving books due to the extensive library collection and inefficient manual systems. Current cataloging and retrieval methods do not take full advantage of technological advancements, leading to wasted time and frustration. The lack of an AI-based solution means that the retrieval process remains slow and error-prone. Therefore, a more efficient, AI-powered system is needed to optimize book retrieval.

Objectives of the Study

1. To develop an AI-powered library book retrieval system using computer vision for the University of Maiduguri.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the AI-based retrieval system in assisting students and staff with locating books.

3. To assess the impact of the AI-powered system on the overall functionality of the library and user satisfaction.

Research Questions

1. How can computer vision be used to design an AI-powered library book retrieval system for the University of Maiduguri?

2. How effective is the AI-powered system in assisting students and staff in locating books efficiently?

3. What is the impact of the AI-based book retrieval system on user satisfaction and library operations?

Research Hypotheses

1. The AI-powered library book retrieval system will significantly improve the speed and accuracy of book retrieval at the University of Maiduguri.

2. Students and staff will report higher levels of satisfaction with the AI-powered book retrieval system compared to traditional methods.

3. The implementation of the AI-based retrieval system will improve overall library efficiency and reduce the time spent on locating books.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide insights into the use of AI and computer vision in transforming library services, enhancing the user experience, and improving efficiency in resource retrieval. The findings will be valuable for the University of Maiduguri in upgrading its library services and can serve as a model for other universities looking to modernize their library systems.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the development and evaluation of an AI-powered book retrieval system at the University of Maiduguri, located in Maiduguri LGA, Borno State. The study will only cover the book retrieval process and will not address other aspects of library management.
